Colman Domingo was born on 28 November 1969 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. He was raised as the third of four children by his mother Edith Bowles, and her husband in a working-class household.
Domingo attended Overbrook High School and later Temple University, where he majored in journalism. Soon thereafter he moved to San Francisco, California, where he started acting, mainly in theatre productions.
In Domingo's personal life and marriage, he is openly gay, met his husband Raúl Domingo and they got married in 2005.
