At its peak, more than 30 groups were selling operas and performing arts, rewarding gods, and entertaining people, forming a special cultural phenomenon. From the late Qing Dynasty to the 1930s and 1940s, Jiaxing served as the performance center of the Shuilu Beijing troupe for a hundred years. Various opera troupes and actors from the north and the south gathered here, laying a solid foundation for Beijing opera, the earliest national opera popular in northern cities—the Jiangnan brand.
